Maestri Property No. II Site

This 9.5-acre site is located behind 756 State Fair Boulevard in the Town of Geddes, OnondagaCounty, New York. The site includes a 4.5 acre land filled area adjacent to a wetland. The site iscurrently inactive but was formerly used for disposal of caustic coated mill scale which was generated by the Crucible Steel Company, Inc., in Solvay. Disposal of wastes at the site has resulted in contamination of site media including soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediment.A RI/FS is underway. In 2004, an interim remedial measure was performed at the site. The site area is zoned commercial. Disposal of wastes at the site from the Crucible Steel facility and also from Val’s Motors, a nearby auto shop and dealership, has resulted in the contamination of site media including soil, surface water and sediment. In 2004, an IRM to remove PCB contaminated soil was performed at the site. An RI/FS was completed in 2008 and a Record of Decision (ROD) issued in March 2008. The major aspects of the remedy discussed in the ROD include excavation of wetland sediment, consolidation of fill material and soil cover over the fill area.

Primary contaminants at the site include chromium and barium. Investigations have determinedthat site operations have impacted site groundwater, as well as surface water and sediments inthe adjacent wetland. Contamination of site media, including sediments in the adjacent wetland,presents a significant environmental threat (NYSDEC 2005b)
